Although his Vauxhall Vectra Challenge racing
season ended today at Silverstone, Jason Yeomans says he’s already
looking forward to his next outing in a racing car. The Lincoln-based
Scot was in good spirits this evening as he packed away his
helmet bag, after a spirited battle to fifth place in damp track
conditions, but says he’s already put the 1999 season behind
him and is thinking instead of his next big opportunity - a
chance to test the factory-supported Vauxhall Vectra Touring
Car at Pembrey circuit, Wales, on September 28. As his prize
for being one of the top-three Vectra Challenge points scorers
at mid-season, Yeomans will get to drive the car fellow-Scot
John Cleland raced in the British Touring Car Championship until
his retirement today. Yeomans today slipped to fifth in the
final points standings, after mechanical problems in yesterday’s
timed qualifying kept him back in eighth place on the starting
grid, and then a race shortened from 15 to eight-laps meant
there was precious little opportunity to make up ground. Yeomans’
reflected: It hasn’t been a good year for me. I should’ve been
challenging for the title, but I had engine problems at Knockhill,
Brands Hatch, and Knockhill, and three times I was knocked off
the circuit. But I really enjoyed it today; it was good, close
racing, with plenty of overtaking, and I’ve ended the season
with my confidence intact. When the car’s right, I’ve proved
I’m right on the pace. I’m really looking forward to the Touring
Car test; I’m just going to go for it, and know I’ll do well.
